Creativity Placebo: Proof That Creativity Levels Are All In Your Head
I used to think that creativity was a fixed attribute. You either had it or you didn't. But that was about 150 scientific studies ago. I've since learned that creativity is far from fixed and that it's our own mindset that often gets in the way.
The research teams had two groups of 45 university students: one who were given a smelly substance (smelled like cinnamon) and told that the smell would enhance their creativity; the second group also smelled the substance but were not told that it would enhance creativity.
Turns out those who believed the smell would improve their creativity actually performed significantly better in the creativity task both groups performed.
What does this prove? It proves we have to get out of our own way. We have to believe. We have to know that we can come up with that next big idea, uninhibited.
Even if it means sniffing a useless substance and convincing ourselves it'll work.
